🍂🎃When the colder months roll in, there’s nothing better than having a bottle of homemade syrup on hand to keep your immune system strong. Elderberries and rosehips are packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, and natural goodness – plus they taste amazing together!

Here’s a simple mixed recipe of berries and rosehips, which is great for kids to follow as they forage for the ingredients they need to create their Halloween potions!

🍂 Ingredients

600g mix of fresh elderberries (destemmed) and rosehips (topped & tailed) quantity isnt important to be honest, just fill a carrier bag the best you can!

1.2 litres water or enough to cover the amount of berries you collected.

300g sugar (or honey if preferred, added once cooled) - use half the amount of sugar of the total weight of berries/rosehips foraged.

1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon (optional)

4–5 cloves (optional)

A slice of fresh ginger (optional)

🛠️⚗️Method

1. Prepare the berries: Remove elderberries from stems (they can be toxic if eaten raw in quantity) and trim rosehips. Rinse well.

2. Simmer: Add berries and boiling water to a large sauce pan. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat and simmer for around 20–30 minutes until soft.

3. Mash & strain: Use a potato masher to crush the berries and rosehips. Strain through a muslin cloth or fine sieve into a clean bowl.

4. Sweeten: Return liquid to the pan. Stir in sugar (or honey after cooling) and spices. Simmer gently until sugar is dissolved.

5. Bottle up: Pour into sterilised bottles and seal. Store in the fridge for up to 2 months.

🫙🍷How to Use

Take 1–2 teaspoons daily through the winter months.

Drizzle over porridge or pancakes for a vitamin-packed sweet treat.

Stir into hot water for a soothing immune-boosting tea.

⚠️Caution: Elderberries should always be cooked before consuming.

🍂🎃When the colder months roll in, there’s nothing better than having a bottle of homemade syrup on hand to keep your immune system strong. Elderberries and rosehips are packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, and natural goodness – plus they taste amazing together!

Here’s a simple mixed recipe of berries and rosehips, which is great for kids to follow as they forage for the ingredients they need to create their Halloween potions!

🍂 Ingredients

600g mix of fresh elderberries (destemmed) and rosehips (topped & tailed) quantity isnt important to be honest, just fill a carrier bag the best they can!

1.2 litres water or enough to cover the amount of berries you collected.

300g sugar (or honey if preferred, added once cooled) - use half the amount of sugar of the total weight of berries/rosehips foraged.

1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon (optional)

4–5 cloves (optional)

A slice of fresh ginger (optional)

🛠️⚗️Method

1. Prepare the berries: Remove elderberries from stems (they can be toxic if eaten raw in quantity) and trim rosehips. Rinse well.

2. Simmer: Add berries and boiling water to a large sauce pan. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat and simmer for around 20–30 minutes until soft.

3. Mash & strain: Use a potato masher (or blender/back of a spoon) to crush the berries and rosehips. Strain through a muslin cloth or fine sieve into a clean bowl.

4. Sweeten: Return liquid to the pan. Stir in sugar (or honey after cooling) and spices. Simmer gently until sugar is dissolved.

5. Bottle up: Pour into sterilised bottles and seal. Store in the fridge for up to 2 months.

🫙🍷How to Use

Take 1–2 teaspoons daily through the winter months.

Drizzle over porridge or pancakes for a vitamin-packed sweet treat.

Stir into hot water for a soothing immune-boosting tea.

⚠️Caution: Elderberries should always be cooked before consuming.

This syrup is a simple, natural way to keep the family healthy – and it’s delicious too!

🍂☕Toptip: dehydrate the leftover berries/rosehip pulp (can use an air fryer) and store it in a separate jar to be used as herbal tea leaves! Just add to boiled water to infuse!

🌿What you need: twigs/bamboo skewers, sellotape, cover film, colorful leaves!

🛠️How to make: collect some leaves, glue to the paper then draw legs, eyes etc then name your beasts!

4. Clay monsters

🛠️ How to make: Mould the monster bodies with clay then create holes for eyes and stick twigs/ nuts or whatever you find to create your own clay monster!

5. Spiders webs

🌿What you need: atleast 3 sticks of equal length and some string!

🛠️How to make: spread the sticks out on top of each other creating the basis of a web shape then tightly weave the string in and out between the central point of the 3 sticks to hold them together (or cheat and use sellotape!) once the centre is tight begin expanding the string out in a circular formation around each stick creating new web layers watch rotation.
